My name is Chelsa Knowles. I am originally from Colorado Springs, CO and eventually wandered over to Gainesville, FL where I fell in love with the spanish moss, the ocean, the community. It was in the south that I became deeply rooted in women’s activism and birth rights. I have since trained with DONA, CAPPA, and am now pursuing certification with BAICD and Still Birthday.
I am a big fan of mid century pop culture and design. I am a new school hippy and I cry harder when I am happy than when I am sad. I love all mediums of art. I use birth photography as a way to combine my love of both art, women and the birth experience.
In a prior life I worked in special education. Also as a nanny and au pair teaching English in Germany. I have always loved working with kids and as the years went on and life events unfolded I began to empathize and connect with women from all walks of life and realized my passion for advocating for birth choices and supporting women and families.
I am an aspiring midwife and hope to earn my PhD in midwifery (sometime this century). I am an advocate of many sorts. I am a vegetarian and strive to maintain a cruelty-free lifestyle. I am passionate about health, women’s rights, animals, birth, sexual education, and the right to choose. I am a gay friendly doula and support equality among all.
Wish you were here-Sydney – I’d be up for birth photography! Probably wouldn’t blog them (a little mystery, please!) but I have seen some gorgeous artistic, moving images of this amazingly beautiful adventure.
I wish I was in Sydney also! I have really fallen in love with birth photography. It captures so many exposed human emotions and still remains very tasteful and beautiful; moments that could be lost if dad is holding the camcorder.
